Progressive Leathers Export Limited (PLEL)
Progressive Leathers Export Limited (PLEL) is the sales and marketing company for the skins, pelts and slipe wool produced at the Progressive Leathers Limited (PLL) fellmongery located at Whakatu near Napier, on the East Coast of the North Island. Since inception in 2003, the company has developed an excellent international reputation for producing consistent high quality slipe wool and pelts.
The fellmongery is situated close to the Hawke’s Bay Wool Scour at Awatoto 10 km away and only 16km from the Port of Napier. All wool comes from Ministry of Primary Industries export certified Meat Processing Plants located across the lower half of the North Island. The skins are processed under contract and each supplying meat plant has a refrigerated water washing system to remove contaminants from the wool and temporarily preserve the skin during transfer to the fellmongery. Upon arrival at Whakatu the skins are fellmongered using a very low lime depilatory process and dried using ANDAR 6 drum driers. Both driers are fitted with Streats Moisture regain control equipment which are regularly calibrated by Streats.
The wool is graded and washed or dried by trained experienced wool graders, then put into Lots by grade. Following this, core samples are taken by accredited wool handlers then sent for testing at the independent NZ Wool Testing Authority in Napier. The fellmongery has a detailed Quality Assurance program in place to check and monitor the performance of the production.
The skins and wool are recovered only as a by-product of the food industry. All animals are free-range pasture raised.
